You will arrive at the Lisu Lodge around 10 a.m. After discussing your itinerary, you will be driven to the starting point near Pha Mieng. you will hike (90 minutes) along a jungle trail and stop at the remote village of Hmong Pha Mieng (90 minutes) to visit the inhabitants of this small hill-tribe village. There you will enjoy a picnic lunch in the forest.

Then, you will make your way to the top of the mountain (90 minutes) where the Red Lahu Village of Pha Daeng is located. You will continue walking along the mountain ridge to the Lahu village of Kup Kap (60 minutes; Difficulty Level: Moderate). From that high vantage point, You will have a spectacular view of the Mae Taeng district and Chiang Mai city. Beyond the mountain peaks to the west lies Myanmar (Burma). You will have dinner and stay overnight at Lahu Outpost, which is modeled on a traditional Lahu house. Basic facilities and amenities such as Western-style toilets and a communal shower, mattresses, pillows, bed linen, blankets, towels and mosquito nets are provided

After an early breakfast, we will hike down a steep jungle path (90 minutes) passing the Huay Sadharn waterfall. A picnic lunch will be served on riverbank. Then we will go rafting down the river for another 45 minutes. Following this exciting ride in an inflatable or bamboo raft, you will be driven to Lisu Lodge.

En route, we stop off to relax and enjoy a beautiful landscape at our tea plantation where you will be led by an experienced guide who will introduce you to the process of growing and harvesting tea as well as vegetation propagation to produce tea seedlings at the nursery, whilst teaching you how to pluck tea leaves and enjoy a cup of fresh-roasted tea. Enjoy a delicious picnic lunch.

Upon arrival at Lisu Lodge, a welcome drink will be served. Guided by a Lisu villager, walk from Ton Lung temple to visit the herbal garden. Then continue through the village with a stop for a cup of tea at the village shaman’s house. Chat with the Lisu shaman and learn about his life, beliefs, curing rites and Lisu traditions.

Time at leisure until Thai dinner with a traditional Lisu dance show. Overnight at Lisu Lodge.

Today, after breakfast, you are free to choose an activity that suits your interest, including:

  • A guided cycling tour around the Lisu village
  • A steam bath
  • A traditional massage
  • An ox-cart ride through farmlands and orchards to the Thai village of Baan Pang Mai Daeng

After that, you will be driven to Chiang Dao and the ethnic Karen village, stopping for lunch on the way. From there, we will hike through the tropical forest (two hours) to a Lahu village.

Then, you will be transferred to Khum Lanna. Enjoy a refreshing welcome drink upon your arrival at Khum Lanna. After a short rest, your host will take you to the kitchen where you will learn about Thai cooking ingredients and how to cook four authentic Thai dishes. Enjoy the fruits of your labors with a full four-course Thai dinner, with your host and friends. Stay overnight at Khum Lanna

After a coffee/tea wake-up call, you will start the day with a sunrise cycling trip along a rural country road to visit a village market. With the help of your guide you may buy local biscuits and garlands to offer to the monks during a visit to a temple. Then you take a short walk to a local hardware shop that sells farm tools, supplies and rice seed. Chat with the owner (also a farmer) and learn more about the history of Thai rice and different species and properties of rice.

On the way back, you will pay a visit to a Buddhist temple where a respected Buddha image is enshrined under a sacred tree. Continue cycling along a scenic route of canals and rice fields. Upon your return, a Lanna-style breakfast awaits you at the riverside.

Then, you will have a chance to exercise your cooking skills by making steamed sticky rice. Later, guided by your host, you will take a casual walk around Khum Lanna’s organic garden where a variety of vegetables, fruits and herbs are grown.

Your lunch will include a Lanna country-style barbeque, steamed sticky rice and other delicious Thai dishes. In the afternoon, you have a variety of fun and relaxing activities to choose from, such as:

  • A guided cycling tour around the beautiful countryside of Khum Lanna
  • A class of creative fruit (or vegetable) carving
  • A local herbal steam bath to rejuvenate your body
  • A therapeutic hot-pressed herbal massage

Lisu Lodge is managed as a partnership between Asian Oasis (a travel company focused on sustainable tourism, offering a collection of unique travel experiences in northern Thailand) and the local Lisu community. The Lisu migrated from southern China and Tibet in the early 20th century and have found a home in Chiang Mai province. The local community has been involved in the development and operations of Lisu lodge from the beginning. The staff members of the lodge consist mainly of people from the Lisu hill tribe village and a portion of all proceeds earned are shared directly with the village.
