Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge is in South Africa's Northern Drakensberg, the mountain range that divides Lesotho and South Africa. The lodge features several chalets built into the mountains and sits at the trailhead to the famous Mount-aux-Sources and Tugela Falls hike.
Visitors often hike the Chain Ladders, Mahai Falls or Gudu Falls. Others watch the morning feeding of the endangered vultures at the 'Vulture Restaurant." On Sunday, there is a choir service at the Batlokoa church which you are welcome to attend. You can also do some shopping with local traders at the village of Tsheseng.

The Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge is a vibrant community-owned project run by the local Sotho community, the Batlokoa. The Batlokoa community is comprised of Sotho-Tswana peoples who have inhabited this area since the 19th century. Known for their kindness, the Batlokoa welcome hikers, climbers and nature lovers to get to know their culture and backyard. They invite you to hike the foothills, visit the endangered bearded vultures, and interact with local traders while you stay in their beautiful mountainside chalets.

Getting There

The Lodge is located 4 hours from Johannesburg, Durban or Bloemfontein. Directions: Follow the main routes to Harrismith. From Harrismith take the R712 in the direction of Clarens/Golden Gate. At the town of Phuthaditjhaba, take the R57 and continue straight through Phuthaditjhaba over the Namahadi River and enter the Sentinel Peak at the Toll Gate. Follow the signs to Witsieshoek which is about 27 km from where you first entered Phuthaditjhaba.
