Sapana Village Lodge cares for and has rescued a small group of elephants that now live in a large open area at the property. Some of the elephants were previously abused at unethical safari lodges and logging companies and all have a much better life at Sapana. While Sapana Village Lodge has done much good for these elephants and is very careful with how they are treated, they still do offer travelers (maximum 2 at a time) the chance to ride elephant at the lodge. They believe that this does not hurt the elpehants; they use no abusive methods in their treatment of the animals; and also offer alternative experiences with the elephants that do not involve rides.
As a company, Lokal does not encourage travelers to ever ride elephants and we strongly recommend travelers who visit Sapana to decline the opportunity to ride the elephants during their stay.
