Get ready for a climb! The trek typically starts at 5 a.m. in order to avoid the heat of the day.  During this 8 hour hike you'll make several stops to rest, enjoy a breakfast on the trail and observe wildlife. After several hours of elevation gain, you'll cross the Rio Terpi and reach El Refugio where you'll enjoy a well-deserved delicious lunch. This is a rare experience, to be so far from civilization and so deep in the forest. At night you will hear the sounds of the forest animals. It will be easy to see and hear frogs. The Refugio is in a very moist cloud forest. After lunch, we can look for quetzals and trogons, or just rest, read or play games.

After breakfast in the Refuge, you'll walk to El Jardín. Just 4 km from the Refuge, El Jardín (the garden) is located in a peat ecosystem dominated by grasses and shrubs. El Jardín owes its name to the colors and shapes of its plants, which resemble those of a natural garden. A picnic-style lunch is shared in El Jardín, and in the afternoon you can walk along the nearby trails or enjoy the peace of this marvelous forest. Dinner and lodging in the Refuge.

Return hike. The third day we will use to return along the same route, but now going down from the Refuge to the town of Altamira. The same stops will be taken and we can observe more closely the beauty along the Valle del Silencio (Valley of Silence) trails.
