Why Lokal Recommends Casitas Tenorio B&B

Background

Family Business | Local/Foreign Owned with 100% local staff

A Unique Story

Casitas Tenorio is our business and our home. We are Donald Varela Soto and Pip Kelly Varela and we are a Costa Rican/ Australian couple. Casitas Tenorio B&B is more than just a place to stay – it’s an invitation to experience Costa Rican life as part of our community. This is a working dairy farm, where we grow our own food and are working to regenerate the forest on areas of the farm. We combine our B&B with our farm in a sustainable way and share our love for the land and our community with our guests.

Community Connection

The owners of Casitas Tenorio are active members of the community and have taken many steps to ensure their business supports local people and their employees. Among many other steps - they've supported several community projects; are members of the local development association; provide fair wages to their staff; joined in Rainforest Alliance training and were founding members of the Costa Rican Chamber for Rural Tourism.

Environmental Engagement

Casitas Tenorio also strives to be as environmentally sustainable as possible. They built their casitas into the surrounding environment, using recycled and salvaged materials. They also take many actions to ensure their day-to-day operations support conservation. These include: producing their own energy through biodigestors; recycling and composting; using a bio-climatic drying room to avoid using a drier and growing much of their food organically on site.
