A Unique Story

Ashley Blaylock was born and raised in Houston, TX in a large family of eight children. She traded in her life as an attorney in Houston, TX to live and surf along the sunny shores of Nicaragua… and to share the experience with you through CHICABRAVA.
Ashley came to Nicaragua in 2003. At that time, the local surfer guys hadn’t yet surfed with any girls. Surprised that a chica could actually surf too, and not just the boys, they’d yell out “ay…chica brava” (”brave girl”) when they’d see her in the water.
Like so many girls, Ashley never considered that she could actually surf like her brother and his friends. It wasn’t until going to the beach with another girl and seeing her paddle out that she knew not only was it possible for girls to learn the sport, they can rip at it too! The experience of being in the water and surfing with another girl gave her the confidence that she could do it and allowed her to become really stoked on trying. Now, surfing with other girls provides the motivation to push harder and reach new levels daily that surfing with guys just doesn’t do. This is the idea behind CHICABRAVA.

Community Connection

ChicaBrava identify themselves as an avenue to empower women through surfing. They seek to utilize it as a means to effectuate profound personal change both in the private and public sectors. Also, ChicaBrava is involved in the community through several projects & initiatives. For example, they host a charitable surf camp empowerment program for underprivileged young women in Nicaragua. In previous years, they focused exclusively on aiding in the rehabilitation of victims of human trafficking. In 2015, we expanded our outreach program to include a broader mission of combatting cultural gender inequality in Nicaragua and overcoming the negative effects of generations of gender oppression, particularly in the domestic setting.

Environmental Engagement

CHICABRAVA's Cloud Farm is located on a 500 acre private reserve where they practice organic farming and responsible land management.
Occurring on the first Sunday of every other month, CHICABRAVA also invites all schools and friends in the local area to join a beach cleanup. This is a way to not only cleanup the local San Juan del Sur Bay, but it is a new initiative to bring the community, expat and local, together as one for the same common purpose.
