A Unique Story

Chilamate Rainforest Eco-Retreat was born out of founders Davis Azofeifa and Meghan Casey's dream to build a project that would benefit the local community and preserve their homeleand in the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor.
The original owners of the land had refused to sell to anyone that was not from Sarapiqui and 100% committed to preserving the area. Finally meeting Meghan and Davis made them feel confident they were putting the land in good hands.
After earning steadfast support from numerous local organizations, Davis and Meghan have been able to build their dream and provide beautiful, sustainable lodging to travelers while greatly improving the lives of those living in their local communities.

Community Connection

  • Works together with the Smart Soccer Academy to provide free facilities, equipment and coaching to local kids in their Chilamate Soccer Camp
  • Organizes and plans the Sarapiquí River Festival to spread the importance of conserving and protecting the Sarapiqui River while promoting river sports and providing local youth and families the opportunity to get on the river and try out rafting and kayaking
  • Designed the Sarapiqui River School after forming connections with World Class Kayak Academy to provide local kids with kayaking equipment and instruction to share in the world class kayaking nearby
  • Began an alliance with the World Leadership School to help partner with 6 local schools supporting infrastructure projects, teacher training, access to technology, and virtual global learning projects.

Environmental Engagement

  • Receives support from the Rainforest Alliance on training in ways to improve business practices, community outreach programs and sustainable practices within the Retreat
  • Preserves 55 acres of rainforest and uses solar power, rainwater catchments, natural lighting and air conditioning, and only biodegradable environmentally friendly cleaning  products.
  • Works with EARTH University and their program for small tourism projects, Promoting Sustainable Markets (PROMES) to further the efficiency of their conservation practices
