Why Lokal Recommends El Albergue Ollantaytambo

Family Business started in 1925| Local/Foreign Owned with 90% local staff

A Unique Story

Originally opened in 1925 by the name of “Hotel Santa Rosa," El Albergue is a historic and romantic lodge located in the Ollantaytambo train station. It's new owners have made an effort to preserve this history and connect their hotel with the community. They aim to create unique and meaningful travel experiences using local resources, and support them with a deeply instilled commitment to the social and environmental beauty of Ollantaytambo.

Community Connection

In Peru, today's children face increasing challenges as environmental, social and economic conditions are constantly altered. On their farm, El Albergue opened an alternative education program called Kuska School to teach children the skills, values and knowledge necessary to be successful individuals, while positively contributing to society. Most recently, 100% of the El Albergue staff participated in Queña Raymi, a 2-day reforestation effort in the local community of Huilloc. Also, they collaborate with local NGO’s to support their tourism activities such as a weaving workshop which in turn fund the NGO’s programming.
They are also committed to hiring local employees and contracting services, such as guides and adventure activities with local organizations. As tourism is growing at an exponential rate in Ollantaytambo, they offer training in vocational skills and hospitality workshops with industry leaders.

Environmental Engagement

The Finka at El Albergue was started with the goal of fighting water pollution caused by pesticides used in local agriculture. By creating their own source of fresh and organic produce to use in their restaurant, they contribute as little as possible to these harmful farming practices. Therefore, guests are able to enjoy the freshest possible fare in the restaurant at El Albergue. As half of a hotel’s waste is food waste, they are proud to utilize all organic waste on their farm by using it for supplementary animal feed as well as composting instead of using chemical fertilizers. With the organic farm, they have been able to build their own sustainable supply chain. In addition to the farm, the hotel operates a recycling program for plastic, glass, paper, and batteries.
As part of their commitment to the environment, they do not offer to-go containers for food in the restaurant, as they are unable to reliably source recyclable containers. Additionally, In order to save energy and reduce their carbon footprint, El Albergue uses solar panels, energy efficient lighting, and maintains a sheet and towel reuse program.
