Why Lokal Recommends Rios Tropicales

Social Enterprise started in 1985| Locally Owned with 95% local staff

A Unique Story

Our mission, to share the rivers, natural resources and culture of Costa Rica while sharing conservation values, has not changed since we began in 1985. Rios Tropicales was established by three native Central American childhood friends, Rafael Gallo, Jimmy Nixon and Fernando Esquivel. Their deep connection with the region and culture are apparent in every aspect of the company.

Community Connection

Rios Tropicales actively engages and collaborates with the local communities and their individual eco/geo-tourism entrepreneurs.  They hire community members to manage its Rios Tropicales Lodge and sustainable farming projects. They even assist Rios Tropicales senior guides in starting their own adventure/geo-tourism companies.
They also support local communities near where they operate adventure tours, including the indigenous Cabecar Indian community near their award-winning ecolodge. Through employment, development assistance, building of health clinics and schools, and by providing a consistent, profitable market of adventure tourists among all the Pacuare-based river companies, for local organic produce, private label organic coffee, and sustainable fish and cattle farming.

Environmental Engagement

Rios Tropicales established a 2,409 acre private reserve where they've now planted over 25,000 trees. In 1994 they also established the Fundacion Rios Tropicales (Rios Tropicales Foundation) a non-profit environmental organization established to assist in the preservation, protection and restoration of the rivers, streams and watersheds of Costa Rica. Through donations from customers, friends, and our own staff, we have been successful in raising funds to purchase rainforest land for environmental protection and help stop the development of two separate dams threatening the Pacuare river basin.
