A Unique Story

Hotel Villas Gaia is a sustainable operated hotel, strongly committed to preserving natural heritage, promoting local community projects and practicing responsible tourism by taking steps to reduce impact on the environment. For over 8 years they have been participating actively in the Certification program for Sustainable Tourism (CST), a program of the Costa Rican Tourism Board, achieving a 4 out of 5 leaves rating!

Community Connection

The Villas contribute directly to the development of sustainable rural tourism in the community by promoting many of the locally-run experiences near the hotel. For example, guests can take a boat tour to Isla Garza or the mangroves with captain Santos and his wife; visit to the waterfall of the family Lopez in Ojochal; or enjoy a ‘’cafecito’’ at Rancho Lalo and learn about organic farming.
They also source much of the food they need for their restaurant from local farms, fishermen and businesses.

Environmental Engagement

They've put in place a number of programs to reduce electricity and water use throughout the hotel, improving every year to meet or exceed CST standards. They also actively support local conservation projects and organizations, including:

  • the Corcovado Foundation - guests give a voluntary donation of US$ 1 per night stay, to support projects such as the recycling network, the turtle conservation project, the environmental education program and the important support to the ministry of environment in the Osa Peninsula.
  • Reserva Playa Tortuga -____ they facilitate visits to this non-profit biological research and education center located 300 meters south of the hotel. Guests can walking the Nature Trail, learn about the turtle project at the beach of Tortuga and /or contributing directly to their educational program for the schools in our area

Villas Gaia supports the village of Ojochal efforts to reintroduce the famous Maya Ojoche tree and continue the tradition of producing foods with the seeds, known for its health benefits. They help to send travelers to visit where they can buy the flour of the ojoche directly from families involved in the project and also sell the flour at the hotel as participant in the project. Earnings go to a Green Fund, administered by the local women’s group Association de Mujeres Ojochal (AMO)

The hotel is 35 kilometers South of Dominical, 300 meters North of the entrance to Ojochal along the coastal road.
