Guraidhoo, Maldives

Culture Break on Local Island of Guraidhoo

4 Days | Snorkeling, Swimming and Getting to Know Locals

Get an insight into the 'real Maldives' with a short stay on the island of Guraidhoo in the South Male Atoll. In addition to enjoying time on beautiful beaches and snorkeling in the warm waters, you'll get to know many of the locals of this typical fishing island through meals with local families, traditional 'hedika' tea in a local cafe and plenty of time to wander on your own. A 30 minute walk around the island highlights locals going about their daily routine; carpenters at the small boat yard constructing traditional dhoni boats, locals drinking coffee in the many small cafes and children playing simple games in the street. Sit and watch the sunset alongside the locals on the public beach or kick back in a traditional seat called a ‘jolie’ and watch the world slowly pass by.

The ferry operates every day excluding FRIDAY and leaves Male in the afternoon taking 120 minutes to journey across the Indian Ocean to Guraidhoo. You can choose to sit up top and view the beauty of the many Maldives islands that pass you by, keeping your eyes open for dolphins or sit inside, amongst the fruit and vegetables, mattresses and electrical items that have been purchased that day and chat with the locals.
Upon arrival at your guesthouse you will have time to settle in before having a guided tour of the island and experiencing traditional ‘hedika’ - Maldivian savoury and sweet short eats served with black tea at a local cafe.

A traditional Maldives breakfast is taken at the home of a local family before being taken out by boat to enjoy a 90 minute guided snorkeling trip to nearby reefs to discover the underwater world of the Maldives. The afternoon is yours to relax or for those feeling a little more energetic take advantage of the many water sport options available including snorkeling, surfing in season and diving. Dinner this evening will be taken Robinson Crusoe style on the beach (subject to weather conditions).

Following breakfast you will be taken by speedboat to typical Maldives sandbank. Here you have the opportunity to swim, snorkel or just lie back and relax before eating a picnic lunch and then enjoying more of the same!
