Live now! Up to 50% off Epic Trips that Support Local Communities

About Us

Lokal is a marketplace for booking local, sustainable adventures around the world. We carefully select each experience on our site to make sure it provides an amazing travel experience and benefits back to the local community.

How It Works

There are thousands of travel businesses around the world that claim to ‘support local communities’ or be ‘eco-friendly’, but not all of them can back it up. We work with local leaders and a global network of travelers, so we can connect you to family-run businesses, community cooperatives, and social enterprises doing real good. You’ll see details on each profile so you can learn more about how your trip will make a difference.

An Unlikely Beginning

How our experiences in rainforest conservation, microfinance and tech inspired us to start a new kind of travel company.

Meet the Team

We’re a group of nonprofit professionals, documentary filmmakers and technology enthusiasts who believe connecting with local communities is an essential part of all good adventures.

Dave Koken

Chief Exploration Officer

Dave has lived, worked and traveled in over 30 countries including 2 1/2 years in SE Asia where he developed partnerships for the nonprofit Kiva. The incredible kindness, warmth, and entrepreneurial spirit of the people he’s met around the world led him to create Lokal. He loves connecting people and exploring new places. These days, he lives in LA with his wife and dog (who happen to be his favorite travel buddies).

Eytan Elterman

Chief Impact Officer

An entrepreneur and filmmaker, Eytan’s past work has taken him through Central America, South America, Europe, and parts of Africa. It’s those experiences that made him realize what a privilege it is to see the world –- and it’s this type of adventure that drives his work. Prior to Lokal, he cofounded iSeeiTravel media, directed an award-winning documentary about rainforest conservation in Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula and earned an MBA from the Monterey Institute of International Studies.

Marco Bollinger

Chief Storyteller

Peruvian-American producer, director and photographer Marco completed his first feature documentary film 2.5% The Osa Peninsula in 2015. He is currently directing his second documentary Safe Zone about Syrian refugee children in Lebanon and has lived in Tokyo, New York City, Los Angeles, Italy, Costa Rica and Peru. Marco opened his first studio in 2005 in Santa Monica California’s Bergamot Station Arts District where he had a solo art show in Coordination with the Santa Monica Museum of Art. His unique Pop Documentary style has garnered him campaigns for Time Warner Cable and Samantha Thavasa, as well as work with Beyoncé and Justin Timberlake. He works with organizations including UNICEF, the New York City based Robin Hood Foundation, the Community Coalition in Los Angeles, and is co-founder of iSeeiTravel Media and Lokal Travel.

Paul Ericksen

Chief Hacker

Paul has been engineering software for 20+ years and recently helped the nonprofit Kiva connect people around the world. Now he’s leading the development of the Lokal platform. In his past professional lives, he's saved his money and limited vacation time to go on big journeys, and is excited that it's now a job requirement for Lokal.

A Social Enterprise

Lokal is a registered California Benefit Corporation, which means we made doing good a priority from the moment we started. We are also pursuing certification as a B Corp to show our commitment to running our business in a way that’s great for our employees and the communities where we work.
