Beautiful area but overpriced

We booked this trip via Lokal travel. To begin, the food, the nature and the cabins we’re really nice. But we expected a local guide as was promised who could tell everything about the culture and area. The first two days we got a girl who only led us the way and didn’t tell anything about the area. We have not hear her speak in the two days she was with us. Therefore the translator we paid for (a lot) was almost unnecessary. The third day the guide was amazing what let us to think that the girl from the first two days wasn’t a “real” guide. Also there is in the description that there is a bonfire, stories of local legends and folklore. We also booked the traditional ritual bath but it wasn’t provided. If the trip was super cheap it would be fine but we paid 990 dollars for two persons so we think it’s overpriced.

Well planned and executed trip

This trip was well planned and executed from beginning to end. Our guide Mario was fantastic, the food was very good, pick up and drop off from/to Oaxaca was on time. In addition to the scenery, we got some education in local medicinal plants and history in the region. The hikes were not easy but also within range of most anyone in good health with the desire to hike up to 9 miles per day (most days a little less). The hikes definitely had some elevation change, so expect a workout and some sun exposure midday. At one point we needed to use a rope for a short downhill stretch. It was actually quite fun! At another point, we walked a short stretch of the pine forest floor in bare feet…also fun. My only complaint is that I had expected ‘village to village’ hiking whereas all 3 days were actually ‘out and back’. It would have been nice to do a village to village hike at least on of those days.

Profound gratitude

Only through this tour could we have gained the level of appreciation we now have for this region and its people. Neither of us is prone to taking guided tours, but did so out of respect for Mancomunados. To our surprise, we benefitted greatly from this decision. Irwin was outstanding! He was a generous guide who answered our never ending litany of (sometimes repeated) questions with incredible patience and a humor. It was obvious he wanted us to understand the connection between culture and land/vegetation/animals that has existed in Sierra Norte for millennia. We left with feeling full of knowledge and connected to the story of this region. Thank you!
