After the meandering descent from the city of Chachapoyas, you will follow the waters of the Utcubamba River. Once you cross the river, you will arrive at the village of Luya at about 2300 meters high. The village is full of traditional architecture, culture, and cuisine. Then, you will continue your journey through the countryside, seeing incredible wildlife along the way. After, you will arrive at the city of Cohecan, a community based off of cooperative work and dedication to their ancestors. To end the day, head back to the city of Chachapoyas to be taken on a tour to be shown the historic sites, and beautiful market in town. You will then be taken back to your hotel to rest for the next day's adventure!
After breakfast, you will head in the direction of Nuevo Tingo, and start your ascent to the ancient city of Kuelap. Kuelap is the most important archaeological site of Peru's Nor Oriente. Here, you will learn more about the history and significance of the site. After eating lunch in Kuelap, you will go to Milpuc, a beautiful nature preserve. In Milpuc, you will learn about the relationship between the environment and its human inhabitants. Nuevos Camino's sister company, Coffee Mergers, purchases eggs from a local farm owned by their friend Mrs. Lola in this area. After your adventures in Milpuc, you will stay overnight with a local family!
After eating breakfast at your homestay, you'll take a 2 1/2 hour walk to get to the Mausoleum's of Revash, a collection of small buildings and residences that have been preserved over centuries of time! You will see amazing rock paintings and learn about the history of the area. You will eat lunch in Leymebamba, and then visit the incredible museum in the city. The museum is very interactive, and hosts more mummies within their walls than any other museum in Peru! You will learn about the traditions they have with the dead, and be fascinated by all the artifacts. Lastly, you will meet Miguel, who specializes in replicating wooden artifacts that distinguished the Chilchos. You will spend your final night in Leymebamba.
Eat your final's day breakfast, and embark on your journey to Gocta. With three hours of trekking, you will have six viewpoints along the way to see the beautiful Waterfall of Gocta. Along the way, you will see rare wildlife, and get to enjoy the beauty of the mountainous terrain. After your spectacular views of one of the most amazing sceneries in Peru, you will eat lunch and then be transferred back to the bus station in Chachapoyas.
